Muskoka - A Fall Colour Destination

Bright red, glowing orange, soft yellows, against a backdrop of dark green. Foliage season in Muskoka is the most glorious season. Add to that fall fairs, Studio Tours, quaint antique shops, hikes on scenic trails, fabulous fungi, and a three-day Cranberry Festival, and you have the perfect fall destination. The Muskoka Fleet sometimes offers two-for-one pricing on selected afternoon and sunset cruises.

Fall colours are beautiful and vibrant throughout the season – no matter when you choose to travel the patchwork landscape will delight. Typically, the colours start in mid-to-late September and last until Canadian Thanksgiving. Generally, the further north you travel, the earlier the colours change, but only Mother Nature herself knows when the leaves will be at their peak. Huntsville and Algonquin Park areas are usually about a week head of south Muskoka.

If you have a favourite B&B where you want to spend the duration of your trip, make your reservation as soon as you firm up your dates. The fall foliage season is one of the busiest times of the year in Muskoka. Click here for the most recent colour report by the Ministry of Tourism.

Suggestions for finding the best accommodation for you:

Choose a Muskoka B&B - With their warm and gracious hospitality, Muskoka Bed and Breakfasts have become some of the most popular in the country. Choose from turn-of-the-century homes in our picturesque towns, vintage lakeside cottages, or charming country homes. The appeal of B&B's is in the personal touch, the creative and generous breakfasts, the variety of settings and range of amenities.

Be flexible - Is weekday travel possible? You'll find more availability during the week. Retirees and Europeans flock to Muskoka in September! If you desire the comfort and ambience of a B&B, better not leave it to luck on the weekends!

Be adventurous - Colour Tours are the perfect excuse to hit the back roads. Take the tour, but don't be afraid to strike out on your own. Back roads travel can lead you to some of the most breathtaking scenery to be found. In-town B&Bs offer convenient access to shopping and restaurants, while B&Bs outside the town centre offer unique views and experiences. You might want to have an early dinner to save a trip back into town, or ask if you can bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the B&B.

Be spontaneous -Go with the flow! You don't have to plan every detail in advance. Ask your B&B host to suggest local points of interest and events. If your chosen B&B doesn't have availability for the next night, ask your hosts to assist with finding accommodation for your next stop. Muskoka B&Bs have a networking system to help you find another B&B home.

Be prepared - Bring runners or hiking boots, and packing the rainwear just might help ensure clear weather. Don't forget your camera! Bring more film or a bigger digital card than you think you could possibly use. Around every corner Nature's glory is waiting for you.
